ONLINE EXHIBITION OPENING [180’]
expo.fubar.space

Fortunately our host gallery – Siva has so far been left intact and our #fubar_expo art exhibition display as well as one local workshop will be accessible in the gallery space. But due to the earthquake and flooding damage no other aspect of the festival can extend into our physical venue space. Following these complex threads of events, we have decided to fully digitise our venue so we can construct future /’fu:bar/ events and collabs regardless of our venue’s physical (im)permanence or any political (lack of) agendas to (not) invest in maintaining non-profit urban and community culture spaces.
Our new digital, web-based exhibition space (fubar.space) is a virtual replica of our AKC Medika cultural venue, built by v3d (our curator/producer/organizer/everything, assisted by a few dear /’fu:bar/ friends&volunteers), by means of the Unity game engine.
The work shown in this virtual exhibition is an up-to-date (somewhat structured but predominantly scattered) community archive of digital&digitised media glitch art, in a broad span of visual, video, web-based, interactive, generative and sound art. Artists participating in this exhibition have volunteered their time and shared their work to support our community event, and have entrusted us to present you their hopes and struggles via additional metadata on current changes in their lives and artistic production.
Although web-based virtual spaces are not yet fully accessible to everyone (and our gallery space is not yet optimized for mobile phones), it was the closest we could get to democratizing gallery space interaction and currently the most immersive way to share our collaborative efforts. We hope your experience in viewing this gallery is a constructive one.

ONLINE GUIDED TOUR [60’]
live.fubar.space/b/fubar

/’fu:bar/ – our yearly community arts event is currently the longest running glitch art themed festival in the world (*&universe?*), including thousands of artworks/contemplations/experiments just over its intial 5 iterations, and hosting about 100 glitch artists and/or their work per event. (Did you see the fabulous support video our community made us all in 2019?)
Our digital exhibition space (expo.fubar.space) is a virtual environment built by v3d (our curator/producer/organizer/everything, assisted by a few dear /’fu:bar/ friends&volunteers), by means of the Unity game engine. This 3D structure is a replica of our AKC Medika cultural venue, in all its gore and glory. The multimedia art selected for the 2020 #fubar_expo is installed both in the physical space of gallery Siva and in the virtual AKC Medika (as the venue was recently heavily damaged by an earthquake, urgent repairs delay by the owner, and a flood).
Our online guided tour session is meant as an introduction to this interactive digitized space, and as support to visitors’ further explorations of our first virtual /’fu:bar/ 2020 exhibition. The tour will present the {digital} curatorial concept and techniques in creating the venue replica as well as the exhibition install, and will reflect on the many 2020 art pieces shown on display.

Coaxial Arts Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit multi-disciplinary media arts organization devoted to the support of media, sound and performance art. Coaxial provides residencies, studio space, technical support and public exhibition space for live events to showcase underground artists whose works are often not exhibited in galleries as ephemeral art is not conducive to the gallery sales system. Coaxial activates a community of experimental media, sound and performance artists through commissions, events, workshops, live TV tapings, and exhibitions through the foundation’s downtown Los Angeles studio space.

We are happy to invite you to join us on our #fubar_expo #digital_art guided tour, at the physical space of gallery Siva, AKC Medika, Zagreb, Croatia.
/’fu:bar/ – our yearly community arts event is currently the longest running glitch art themed festival in the world, including thousands of artworks/contemplations/experiments just over its intial 5 iterations, and hosting about 100 glitch artists and/or their work per event.
This guided tour session is meant as an introduction to our 2020 collection, and as support to visitors’ further explorations of our first virtual /’fu:bar/ exhibition (accessible online as a virtual interactive web-based installation). The tour will present the exhibition install in depth, as well as some of the {digital} curating techniques enabling inclusive and community-oriented assembly of glitch art archives.
* Important:
Due to current health&safety regulations, participation is limited by the gallery size, and every visitor needs to previously individually register via email to be able to partake: fubar@hacklab01.org
To ensure safety of all – participants should bring their own face masks or will be provided with one free of charge and mandatory to wear, and will have their temperature checked and hands desinfected. If you feel ill prior to the event, please #stay_home, #stay_kind and #stay_well.
VIDEO SCREENING @ Siva & online [120’]

What we have chosen to show as part of this year’s screening is part of our #fubar_expo video art selection, which is also being shown as part of the URL/IRL gallery exhibition.
As glitch art is predominantly that of an experimental genre, and most often entails various technical*aesthetical processes to challenge both its semantic and materialist paradigm – we believe the work we have chosen for this screening can incite new types of curiosity towards the vast electronic experiment in short forms of contemporary video art.

* Applications mandatory (until Oct 3rd 23:59CEST): fubar@hacklab01.org

Please think about how you would like to use the webcam to animate facial images and prepare some material (image, video, audio) you would use in the workshop.
We are looking forward to meeting you all!
How can you be anybody in Zoomspace? Very recent developments in deep-learning, allow creating synthetic media of unprecedented quality and ease. The first-order-motion-model can do facial reenactment in real-time, provided with only a single image of your desired avatar. This came not a moment too soon, as Human communication was forced to move online due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Can this be an opportunity to fulfill the long promised cybernetic utopia, where we could shed our physical shells and become however we wish to be? And how does this pertain to issues of privacy, identity and trust? I will review the contemporary technologies and show how I use them in my artistic and activist practices. This is a hands-on participatory tutorial, where you will create deep-fake videos using your own materials, and play with various options of becoming an online avatar. No prior knowledge needed.

Teuta Gatolin [HR] : Magical objects: Nature, scanners, and companions [120’]
* Applications mandatory! fubar@hacklab01.org

We’ll be using materials and objects found in nature (like plants, horns, stones, seeds, twigs…and tiny parts of e-waste) alongside objects that can confuse our or the scanner’s vision – such as reflective foils, deforming lenses, mirrors and other tricky shiny things. We won’t be shaping an image, we’d go searching for it together.
This workshop is not so concerned with the technological aspects of glitch, but is centred upon an attempt to imagine and un-imagine what we think of when we think of “nature” – using glitch and error as tools in this world-building and fable-making. By searching for errors in a group setting – or glitching with companions, both human and non-human ones – we’ll attempt to pry open our narratives on nature, how we define it, and where we got those definitions from.
The workshop doesn’t require any previous knowledge. There will be a short talk at the beginning covering basic ideas about species entanglement, speculative fabulation and worlding as presented in works by Donna Haraway, Anna Tsing and other writers/artists involved with ecology, eco-feminism and related branches of thinking/doing.
* Note:
Participants should bring their own laptops, preferably with Gimp or Photoshop already installed. All other materials for the workshop are provided, but participants are welcome to bring smaller objects or other materials they find interesting and wish to work with.
If you don’t have a laptop you can bring, please contact teuta.gatolin@hotmail.com or fubar@hacklab01.org, because we do have a laptop or two extra that we can bring for you to work on. 🙂
Teuta Gatolin is an intermedia artist based in Zagreb, Croatia.
In her work she is concerned with chaos, entanglements of various kind and things that live undefined between other defined things. Her artworks are often process-based and spawn iterations of themselves, realized in collaboration with others. Currently working on topics of eco-feminism, climate crisis and species entanglement.

Rosa Menkman [NL] : Enhance, Boost, Revamp [60’]
fubar.space/b/enhance_boost_revamp

Menkman’s work focuses on noise artifacts that result from accidents in both analogue and digital media (such as glitch and encoding and feedback artifacts). The resulting artifacts of these accidents can facilitate an important insight into the otherwise obscure alchemy of standardization via resolutions.
The standardization of resolutions is a process that generally imposes efficiency, order and functionality on our technologies. It does not just involve the creation of protocols and solutions, but also entails the obfuscation of compromises and the black-boxing of alternative possibilities, which are as a result in danger of staying forever unseen or even forgotten.
Through her research, which is both practice based and theoretical, she uncovers these anti-utopic, lost and unseen or simply “too good to be implemented” resolutions — to produce new ways to use and perceive through and with our technologies.
