Glitch as an educational concept
This talk will focus on how elements of glitch art’s system-thinking and distortion could be used in education to facilitate further development in imaginative and critical thinking among students.
Questions we would like to address include how can meta-knowledge of systems & system-thinking be taught with the concept of glitch in schools, is glitch the contemporary bottom-up approach to constructively question and break boundaries of automated high-tech culture of late capitalism; and what could be done with glitch as a tool to recombine, innovate and experiment on piles of content that young generations are confronted with in contemporary visual culture?The talk references 2016 paper “A Glitch Pedagogy: Exquisite Error and the Appeal of the Accidental” by Ernesto Pena & Kedrick James, including its Glitch Pedagogy Manifesto.
Niklas Washausen
Born in Berlin, Niklas studied Fine Arts, Design & English in the teacher training program at the CDFI & University of Greifswald. Washausen’s practice is based around media/digital arts and installation, where he searches for ways to transform the immediate, intuitive and familiar into distanced, confusing and unheimlich. He participated in Fubar 2022 and the Experimental Photography Festival 2023 as an invited artist. Currently, he’s a research assistant at the University of Greifswald and a project assistant within the chair of Art Pedagogy/Didactics at the University of Potsdam.
