Sonification: Sound & Image
A technical workshop based on exploring the process of sonification. Sonification is a method for interpreting audio data as image data and vice versa. The workshop takes place in three different programs (Touch Designer, Processing3, and Audacity).
Workshop software requirements:
TouchDesigner is a non-free proprietary software available for Windows or macOS which you may or may not want to download and use depending on your stance on open source and libre software – open source alternatives would be Puredata or Blender. Interestingly though TouchDesigner does seem to incorporate some open source software like opencv. For workshop purposes you can download Touchdesigner for free on a student licence and for non-commercial use (download is 1.9GB). Touchdesigner will not run on all hardware, so please check the requirements to see if it’ll work on your machine. You may need to download extra libraries so it is advisable to be connected to the internet during installation. After installation you will also have to register and log in to your account to activate a licence key for the program to run.
Audacity is open source and free, nonproprietary software. It would be useful to download the separate ffmpeg plug-ins (a version of FFmpeg designed to work with Audacity and provide plugins for mp3 m4a etc).
Processing version 3.5.4 is suggested for this workshop.
Tench Cholnoky
Glitch artist who specializes in real-time interactive art. Their work focuses on transcoding and sonification, interpreting audio data as image data and vice versa. They primarily use Touch Designer, Processing, and the Adobe suite. They are a part of the art collective //PIXELMOUTH and are currently based in New York City.
