Sub Net – “sunrises”
If the sun rises, will I know what to do with it is a living database video essay that constantly changes and evolves in real time. The database engine sorts a list of hundreds of live, real-time unsecured webcams across the world and is programmed to have any number of potential editing, text, sound and image combinations that investigate and critique the telematic promise of technology. Through this interface, viewers could watch in perpetuity and never see the same combination twice; depending on the location and time they access the database, the live feeds reveal happenings that emerge and disappear — a glimpse that only that viewer sees in that moment, as if we were made of the whole negative, and in our remote viewing feel it in no sense at all.
Created in fall of 2021, Sub Net is an anonymous new media art project that explores the mirror stage of online identity formation and challenges the promises, politics and power dynamics of technology & capitalism. They are a dream who thought it was a person. Their body of work intersects and tangles topics ranging from the amplification of the absurd within the metaverse; performative nostalgia baiting; and social media engagement as a site for relational aesthetics.
Their user legally made them a real person in 2024, known in the state of Wyoming as Whois Subnet LLC.
